Oscar Valdez impressive in homecoming. Results from Tucson!
TUCSON, ARIZONA – December 12, 2015 – In the main event, undefeated Oscar Valdez upped his record to 18-0, 16 KOs with a vicious third round knockout. His opponent, Ernie Sanchez of General Santos City in the Philippines, was very game and was not going to go down without a fight. In the second round, Valdez continued to become more and more aggressive and landed a lot of hard, accurate power punches on Sanchez. About a minute into the third round, both men traded tremendous left hooks but Valdez got the better of the exchange as he dropped his opponent and he failed to beat the count. “He hit me with a very good left hook at the same exact time I landed mine, even though I dropped him, his hook was very good” said Valdez when referencing the exchange at the end. Valdez said he felt no pressure coming into this fight with his promoter, Bob Arum, seated at ringside along with many members of his family and friends, it simply added to his comfort level in his main event spotlight.
Another undefeated Arizonan, Jose Benavidez Jr (24-0, 16 KOs) won a very decisive 10-round unanimous decision victory over Brazilian, Sidney Siqueira. The fight was fought at Benavidez’ pace throughout, a times he stood mid-ring and counter punched, other times he laid on the ropes or would also press the action. A solid performance to which Benavidez states his power was missing. “I got sick a week before the fight but I’m feeling good.” When asked about his own personal assessment of his performance he was fully confident of his shutout victory, but felt as if he could have possibly done better. “I felt fast I just didn’t feel strong. Punches I was landing should have put him down, because I was landing some pretty good shots, I just feel like they didn’t have enough power to put him down. It is what it is, it’s a learning experience and I know if I get sick again I know what I have to do to win the fight.”
On the card’s opener, Super Middleweight Philly fighter, Jesse Hart (19-0, 15 KOs) stopped his opponent, Andrik Saralegui, :54 seconds into the first round with a body punch.
Carlos Castro of Phoenix, Arizona improved his record to 14-0, 6 KOs with a third round knockout over Sergio Najera. Carlos was aggressive throughout and mixed it up when he had to. He showed very good head movement as well anytime Najera attempted to become offensive. A perfectly timed body shot in the third put Najera down and out.
