JoJo Diaz gets quick KO, Cancio upsets Alvarado
In the main event from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph Diaz, Jr., (19-0, 11 KOs) destroyed an outmatched Hugo Partida (20-7-2, 15 KOs), to capture the vacant NABF featherweight title on Friday night. Diaz dominated Partida from the start of the fight with an educated body attack that sit up flush punches to the cranium. Diaz stopped Partida midway through the second round when he landed at will with his left hand Partida though upright had no response.
In the co-main event, featherweight Andrew Cancio, (16-3-2, 12 KOs) came in as the b-side, but left a winner when he upset Rene Alvarado, (22-6, 15 KOs), at 2:41 of the eighth round in a scheduled ten round bout. Alvarado, a limited action fighter, saw early success, but was unable to take Cancio power. A left hook landed in the fifth round by Cancio that changed the tide of the fight as Alvarado never seemed to recover. In the eighth round, Cancio dropped Alvarado before obtaining the stoppage.
Golden Boy Promotions’ 7-foot heavyweight from China, Taishan won an ugly over Daniel Arambula, (3-2, 1 KO) in a surprisingly competitive bout. The judges scored the bout 38-37, 39-36, 39-36 all for Taishan.
