U.S. Olympic Update: Stevenson wins opener, Russell one win away from medal

Team U.S. Boxing favorite heading into Rio 2016 proved again why he is worth the hype as he destroyed Robenílson Vieira de Jesus of Brazil in the round of 16 in the bantamweight division. Stevenson, whom the judges tried their hardest to screw out of the decision, by giving the harmless Brazilian rounds that seemed clear for Stevenson. In the end, Stevenson advance to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 points win over de Jesus.

Stevenson next fights Tuesday, August 16th against Erdenebat Tsendbaatar of Mongolia at 7:30AM PST

In the second bout for Team USA, Gary Antuanne Russell proved that landing the cleaner punches will get you the decision as he bit an clunky and awkward Wuttichai Masuk of Thailand, who tried to mitigate the action as much as possible. In a horrible fight to watch, Russell lost his mouthpiece twice and Masuk held at every moment he could to try and tire out Russell whom he was noticeably bigger than. Russell was awarded a split decision victory.

Russell returns to the ring on Tuesday at 8:15AM PST against Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan. If Russell wins, he will medal in this year’s Olympics

Tomorrow’s bouts will feature flyweight Antonio Vargas taking on Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan at 7:30AM PST and in the afternoon session women’s lightweight Mikaela Mayer will face Anastasia Belyakova of Russia at 1:00PM PST.
