U.S. Olympic Results: Mayer falls one fight short of medal

In the afternoon outing of bouts, lightweight Anastasia Belyakova of Russia was put to the test as she had to give her all to best Mikaela Mayer of United States. Belyakova was more aggressive and had the higher volume, but Mayer landed the cleaner straight punches, which seemed to frustrate many viewers.

The judges scored the bout a split decision with one judge giving the first round 10-10 meaning that Mayer would have gotten a fifth round to fight if it had of been scored for her.

Tomorrow, light welterweight Gary Antuanne Russell faces Fazliddin Gaibnazarov of Uzbekistan at 8:00AM PST and Shakur Stevenson fights Erdenebat Tsendbaatar of Mongolia at 7:30AM PST as they’re the lone male U.S. Olympians in boxing as Claressa Shields makes her debut on Wednesday in the women’s middleweight division.
