UFC champ Khabib wants Floyd Mayweather over any UFC fight
UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who trains in San Jose, Ca, is actively pursuing a fight with undefeated five-division world champion and one of the greatest boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Khabib who held a press conference in Moscow, Russia on Monday stated the bout between Mayweather and himself would be “twice as interesting” as Mayweather’s bout with Conor McGregor, the man Khabib Nurmagomedov beat into submission in October.
The bout, if it were to happen would be a tough sell. Numagomedov is a decent boxer, but in MMA is not known for his elite level boxing, but more his wrestling, which is some of the best the sport of mixed martial arts has ever seen.
This marks a disturbing trend in mixed martial arts as the UFC pay structure appears so bad, that the minute fighters get any type of leverage, they try to leave or go outside of the organization to get more money. Nurmagomedov in the build-up to the McGregor fight was touted as a fighter who would actively defend his UFC title, but after defeating the UFC’s biggest star, McGregor, the leverage appears to be in Numagomedov’s court.
Nurmagomedov is currently awaiting a December decision from the Nevada State Athletic Commission in which he jumped outside of the UFC cage and assaulted a Dillion Danis, a man cornering Conor McGregor, who had said unpleasant things about Nurmagomedov in the build-up. What ensued was an ugly brawl seeing McGregor, Numagomedov and their entourages fighting after the sanctioned bout, which marred a career-defining win for Nurmagomedov. Nurmagomedov will get his suspension at this meeting on December 10th and hopes to move forward with a Mayweather fight in 2019.
Nurmagomedov is currently 27-0 in MMA.
