Estrada beats Rungvisai, Roman unifies titles

The former unified flyweight champion Juan Francisco “El Gallo” Estrada (39-3, 26 KOs) has now entered the pound-for-pound conversation by defeating WBC super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai (47-5-1, 41 KOs) on Friday night at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood, California.

Estrada was too fast for Rungvisai in their rematch as Rungvisai looked a bit slow, and dependent on his toughness over craft. Rungvisai battled back late, to make the bout closer, but was so clearly outboxed early it was too much to overcome.

The judges saw it 115-113, 116-112 and 115-113 for Estrada, who is now the new WBC champion.

A rumor of Estrada fighting WBA super flyweight world champion Kal Yafai, circled shortly after the main event.

In the best fight of the year, WBA super bantamweight champ Daniel Roman (27-2-1, 10KO) won a majority decision winner over now former IBF junior featherweight champ TJ Doheny (21-1, 15KO) to unify two of the titles in the division.

Roman dropped Doheny in the second round and was landing the cleaner of the shot, but a big round in the eighth for Doheny saw the bout get close on the cards.

The fight came down to Doheny’s overhand left, and Roman’s left hook to the body, with Roman’s proving slightly better as he dropped Doheny in the eleventh round as well.

The judges saw the bout 116-110, 116-110 and 113-113.

Former two-time world champ Jesse Vargas (29-2-2, 11KO) knocked out three-time world champ Humberto Soto (69-10-2, 38KO) in the sixth round of a scheduled ten round bout at a 151 pound catchweight. Vargas will be campaigning at 154 lbs. for his next world title run

Anthony “The Magician” Sims Jr (19-0, 17KO) picked up a ten-round decision over Vaughn Alexander (14-3, 9KO) in a ten round super middleweight bout.

Diego Pacheco (3-0, 2KO) knocked out Guillermo Maldonado (1-1, 0KO) in the first round.

2016 Olympic Silver Medalist, Shakhram Giyasov (8-0, 6KO) barely got by Emmanuel Taylor (20-6, 14KO) as he won a close decision to obtain the WBA International Super Lightweight belt. The cards were wide, but Taylor hurt Giyasov, as well as kept the fight very close.

Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadliev, the WBA #1 super bantamweight and a mandatory contender to Daniel Roman (6-0, 5KO) knocked out former world title challenger Carlos Carlson (23-6, 14KO) in the third round.

Middleweight Austin Williams (1-0, 1KO) made his debut a successful one with a first-round knockout over Joel Guevara (3-5-1).
