Boxing Recap: Lomachenko is still really good, Haney impresses, Munguia world champ

Lomachenko continues to make history

Vasyl Lomachenko continues to be incredibly, but at the same time looked as mortal as he ever has or at least since the Orlando Salido fight. Lomachenko, who became a three-division world champion by claiming the WBA lightweight title from Jorge Linares in front of a packed crowd at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

Lomachenko, a future hall of famer, wore the wounds of battle as he appeared to feel the size difference and was not able to overwhelm Linares early and when Lomachenko got cocky, he found himself positioned on the canvas looking up Linares in the sixth round. The bout showed that despite Lomachenko’s special skills and unique athleticism and footwork, his ceiling is nearing for how much in weight he can go.

A well-timed body shot from Lomachenko ended the bout in the tenth round as he stopped Linares, not unlike nearly all of his other opponents in recent memory.

After the bout it appears that his next fight will be August 25th at The Forum in Inglewood, Ca, against more than likely Ray Beltran another lightweight world champion, who is also signed by Lomachenko’s promoter, Top Rank Inc.

undercard ramblings

Carlos Adames

Largely unknown welterweight Cralos Adames of the Dominican Republic fought on the televised undercard on Saturday for the Top Rank Madison Square Garden show and despite a strong telecast push explaining his greatness, didn’t really leave much of impression. Adames is fundamentally sound, showed the ability to slip punches, but also had a low punch output for the welterweight division

Michael Conlan

Michael Conlan fought on the undercard as well and like a lot of his recent outings, it didn’t really register. Conlan, who was beloved and heavily hyped coming out of his Olympic controversy, now seems to have felt the harsh reality of criticism for not looking as spectacular as the viewers had of hoped. Conlan- registered a eight-round decision.

Teofimo Lopez, future star

Lightweight Teofimo Lopez continues his ascension up the ranks as one of the most promising young fighters in the sport of boxing as he stopped his opponent in 64 seconds. Lopez a well-rounded prospect who many are touting as a future star of the sport of boxing made headlines for his dance afterwards as he mimicked a popular dance from the video game “Fort Nite”.

Mikaela Mayer

Women’s lightweight Mikaela Mayer also picked up an impressive victory over Baby Nansen as she picked up a six-round decision victory.

Devin Haney’s TV DEBUT

The ultra talented lightweight Devin “The Dream” Haney picked up 9th round stoppage of Mason Menard in the talented prospects television debut. Haney showed the athleticism of NFL player and solid ring intelligence for a 19-year-old. Haney outboxed Menard and then started to beat up his foe as Menard was left with only one choice walk forward into punches. Menard’s corner had seen enough and stopped the bout in between the ninth and tenth rounds.

Haney, who was walked to the ring by the popular recording artist E-40, has all the elements at play to be a future star of the sport and with a feud bickering between himself and fellow boxing superstar Shakur Stevenson, who knows what the future may hold.

Night Night

Bantamweight Joshua Greer Jr., a fast-handed knockout artist, picked up a an eighth round TKO over the durable Glenn Dezurn. Greer would fight in spurts looking to land big shots that could change the fight as Dezurn was obsessed with pressure, which in effect turned out to be his downfall. The fast hands and power of Greer Jr. were too much as Dezurn would garner momentum just to get hit cleanly and have to try and recover.

Greer Jr. is now rumored to be taking his talents to the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight tournament.

Munguia’s power

Little known junior middleweight Jaime Munguia ran rough shot through Sadam Ali, who quite simply couldn’t take the power of Munguia from the opening bell as Ali touched the canvas or was hurt in a bout that turned out to be a four-round affair.

Munguia, who now is the WBO super welterweight champion, is now the biggest mystery in boxing his power is one of the best in the division or so it seems, but also facing a natural welterweight largely downplays a bit of the win. In short, it is hard to tell where Munguia stands fully in the division, but one thing is for certain if you stand in front of him, the fight could be fan friendly.

Hovhannisyan shown no respect

Azat Hovhannisyan did enough to win on my scorecard against WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas, but the judges didn’t agree. Hovhannisyan, who will jump in with wild punches is a relentless brawling, pressure fighter who lunges into his opponent at every chance he can get. Vargas, a pure boxer in the very essence of the phrase, was given hell by an eccentric fighter who was hard to time and brought out the physical nature of the sport of boxing.

Vargas won, but it was narrowly if that and the judges somehow so the bout very wide. This is a cautionary tale for Vargas moving forward.

Tony Harrison dominates

Junior middleweight Tony Harrison returned to form with a dominant ten-round win that record books will forever see as a split decision win over former IBF super welterweight champion Ishe “Sugar Shay” Smith on Friday night at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas. Harrison kept Smith at the end of his punches and had Smith hurt at times, but Smith was able to hear the final bell. This was the type of performance people were hoping to see from Harrison

Scores were 97-92, 96-93 Harrison and somehow 95-94 Smith.

Andrew Tabiti

Cruiserweight Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti knocked out from world title contender Lateef Kayode with a right hand in the sixth round. Tabiti is now entering the zone of being in consideration to fight fighters at the top of the division in the near future.

Bone beats Kreal

In a victory most won’t respect for how hard it was welterweight Erick Bone battled with all his will to get a ten-round split decision over Cameron Krael, a journeyman gatekeeper known for his power and upsetting prospects. The judges saw the bout 95-94, 96-94 Bone, 95-94 Krael.

Thompson Boxing

WBO Intercontinental welterweight champion Roberto Arriaza made his first defense of his title against John Ruiz by way of a dominant unanimous decision in the main event of Thompson Boxing Friday night card that took place in Ontario, CA at the DoubleTree. Arriaza won by the scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93. Arriaza is a very entertaining fighter who we’re eager to see develop.

The WBC-NABF featherweight champion Erick Ituarte had to earn his victory over Carlos Carlson as the two battled each other unmercifully for eight-rounds. Ituarte picked up the decision, but not easily as both fighters absorbed shots and had were tested to make it the distance of the bout.

Highly touted super featherweight Michael Dutchover picked up a dominant third-round KO to continue his ascent up the division.

Hughie Fury wins

Heavyweight Hughie Fury picked up a fifth-round TKO over Sam Sexton in Bolton, England. This was Fury’s first fight back since losing to Joseph Parker last year.

Mykal Fox vs Anthony Mercado

The nearly 6’4” super lightweight Mykal Fox picked up an eight-round decision over Anthony Mercado in the main event of a bout at the SugarHouse in Philadelphia, PA.
