Danny Garica is one of the biggest names in boxing right now, especially in the welterweight division and especially in the Premier Boxing Champions brand of boxing. That being said he has a contentious relationship with fans of boxing as he started his career off with an upset knockout win over super lightweight Amir Khan, which put him on the map for the masses and a few years later defeated highly touted Lucas Matthysse. You might wonder where the contention comes from, well, that comes from bouts in between such as a debatable win over Mauricio Herrera in a homecoming bout in Puerto Rico for Garcia, who a Philly native never really got “the love” in Puerto Rico one would have hoped or even worse a title defense against Rod Salka, a fighter most fight fans didn’t know of until the announcement of the fight.

At Garcia’s best, he is one of the best fighters in the world and capable of beating anyone in the welterweight division. The problem is a lot of fans view him as a boxing businessman, who is more interested in the paycheck than his opponent and willing to fight path of least resistance if it is available rather than consistently challenging himself against the best. I can’t blame Garcia one bit if that his rational, but I also understand the frustration of the fans. 

That being said, September 8th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York and broadcast worldwide on Showtime, Garcia will be in a very tough fight as he vies to be a two-division world champion.

“I’ve knocked out a lot of fighters for the first time, so it won’t be surprising to me if I knock Shawn Porter out for the first time.” said Garcia in his private gym at his media day.

Garcia, who is known for his unique bravado which is charming, confident and uniquely his own, made it clear that this fight is for all the marbles. Garcia’s trainer, his father, Angel Garcia, has spent the majority of his career as Danny Garcia’s mouthpiece, a proud and vocal father willing to trash talk his foe.

“Porter really isn’t worried about Danny’s power, but he should be. I’m not mad about it, he just better have no excuses in that ring. Because Danny’s not about excuses.” Said Angel Garcia.

Garcia, who bounced back earlier this year from his first career loss to Keith Thurman to pick up a technical knockout over aging former world champion Brandon Rios in the ninth round. Garcia now is looking to not just gain another world title, but enter into the conversation of fighting Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford (though due to the nature of the boxing business, the Crawford fight would be very difficult to make in theory).

“This is another opportunity to become a four-time world champion and that excites me.”

Garcia’s foe, Shawn Porter, is a rugged boxer and one of the most avoided as well as awkward opponent in boxing over the last fifteen or so years. Yet, Garcia feels that the aggressive nature of Porter and his volume plays right into his ability to time the counter punch.

“In boxing, they say the more you throw, the more open you are to get hit. Volume punching has to be effective. I’m the sharper boxer and I land the cleaner punches. That’s more my style. We’ve prepared ourselves for 12 hard rounds of any style.” said Garcia.

The unwavering confidence as Garcia evident throughout his workout as Garcia as Garcia is fighting for the WBC welterweight title that he won when defeated Robert Guerrero to obtain the vacant title, he would then lose a split decision to Keith Thurman a year and a half ago, but Thurman has fought since and got stripped of the title.

“I still feel like the WBC title is mine, so I’m even more ready to reclaim it.”

Danny Garcia also has made the Barclays Center his home, even headlining the opening card from the venue when he knocked out Erik Morales in their rematch. Garcia is no stranger to the venue as he has made the venue his home while on top of the sport. Porter has also found glory their as well winning a world title from Devon Alexander at the same venue, but Porter has not been promoted the same way as Garcia in the venue.

Danny Garcia faces Shawn Porter September 8th from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, in which both men will be vying to be a world champion once again.
