The World Boxing Council has announced that boxer Willie Monroe Jr., who will fight Gennady Golovkin on May 16 at The Forum in Los Angeles, has notified via his promoter Art Pelullo from Banner Promotions, that he will not be able to fight for interim WBC middleweight championship since Monroe Jr. did not comply with the 30 day per fight weigh in.

Some sources Willie Monroe Jr. was not notified of this rule, others have speculated that Monroe Jr. didn’t want to have to pay the sanctioning fee that would accompany follow proper procedure. Nonetheless, regardless of the outcome Gennady Golovkin will be the number one contender to WBC middleweight champion, Miguel Cotto.
