Ryan Garcia fights on Facebook Saturday with new coach

Ryan Garcia is looking for a statement this Saturday at Fantasy Springs Casino and Resort in Indio, Ca. The 20-year-old boxing social media internet sensation, who touts an impressive million followers on Instagram, is coming off the worst performance of his career against Jayson Velez, May 4th, a day before Gennady Golovkin fought. Garcia will now do battle with veteran Carlos Morales with the two fighters both moving up weight to the lightweight division for a ten-round main event on the newly launched Golden Boy Boxing Facebook Watch at Fantasy Springs Casino and Resort in Indio, Ca, in which you can watch the fight through the social media platform.

It is no secret that Garcia being on a fight card based around social media is set-up to promote the new platform, that somewhat struggled in its first outing. The main struggle being bandwidth as the stream stopped working for roughly three rounds during the middle of Joseph Diaz Jr. vs. Jesus Rojas last month. Garcia looks to take his dynamic following and now improve or grow Golden Boy’s newly launched platform, which the promotion has put a lot of money behind.

Garcia has talent, he has charisma and he has a following, but also has something else – flaws. Garcia pulls back straight, doesn’t bend his knees enough making him too upright along and his inside fighting essentially is holding. With that said, he has a lot of speed and a left hook that if it lands within the first three rounds will sit down nearly anyone.

Yet, the last fight he was in was supposed to be a springboard to a world title or at the very least moving the fighter onto the pay-per-view portion of the Canelo vs. Golovkin II fight, instead, he is fighting two weeks prior in a venue that he was fighting at last year. In short, it is hard to not believe that his last performance left executives at Golden Boy Promotions with a lot to be desired.

“I feel good. I love the excitement. I just want everyone to be hyped when I fight. I want everyone’s heart pumping as they wait for a war. My power is going be a big problem. When I go to the body, it’s going to be a big problem. But you never know until you step into the ring. You can’t really tell how he fight until you are in there. Whatever he has said about me is irrelevant. Whether he thinks I’m a kid or that I’m always on social media–that’s irrelevant. What matters is what will happen in the ring. For this fight, you can expect big numbers. It will set new precedents. This Facebook deal was made for me!” said Ryan Garcia about his upcoming fight this Saturday.

On the hand, Carlos Morales, who has a few losses on his record, is the definition of a pro’s pro. He may have lost the big fights of his career, but he never got humiliated. Morales also fights at the mid-range which is closer than Garcia might like, but a little too far away for Garcia to be able to grab him. Morales is the type of fighter from now on Garcia has to fight as it feels like he moved a bit too fast to the ten-round bouts and now is stuck at a certain caliber fighter without the ability to develop further.

“Ryan Garcia cannot knock me out. we’re going to make it a smart fight during every single second of every round. all of my fights have been again tough contenders, and that has given me a lot of confidence. I have faced a lot of top fighters. that’s definitely going to make me mentally and physically ready for September 1. ” said Carlos Morales.

Garcia also had a lot of drama behind his last bout as well as in terms of things outside of the ring as his father, Henry Garcia is no longer his head coach. Rumors circulated that he had trouble in the aftermath of the bout not getting the result he wanted, a brutal KO on a major platform and that things have been up and down. Garcia is now at a new weight class, lightweight that we have yet to see him at, as well as training with Danny Luna per the request of his manager Roger Ruiz (this was refuted).

In short, Garcia is one of the most talked about fighters in the sport, but also a fighter with a lot to prove. Garcia is now training with a new coach, an Instagram model and at a certain point in his career where he can’t fight developmental opponents anymore. Garcia now is looking to silence the critics, though the noise around the popular fighter will just get louder and louder from here on out.

Garcia in many ways is what boxing needs a fighter with a large following that isn’t just same ol’ boxing fans.

Garcia will fight Carlos Morales this Saturday evening on Golden Boy Facebook Watch, which is a stream within the Facebook app.
