2021 Boxing Trainer of the Year – Eddy Reynoso

Eddy Reynoso had an incredible year.

He started by helping Ryan Garcia get a stoppage win over Luke Campbell, which was then followed by Oscar Valdez’s KO win over Miguel Berchelt.

Months later, Reynoso was in Andy Ruiz Jr.’s corner as Ruiz fought Chris Arreola on PPV in the Los Angeles, California.

Then we have his main fighter, Canelo Alvarez, who became the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world, putting forth an epic run, in which, he defeated Billy Joe Saunders, and Caleb Plant stopping both.

Reynoso didn’t lose a big fight this year, and came into a couple bouts as a massive underdog according to the odds makers.

Right now, Reynoso appears to be coming into form as a coach, and has a slew of good talent in his gym, which also allows his fighters the chance to level up not just from the coaching, but the work in the gym.

Honorable Mention:

Yuri Tkachenko – Coaching Usyk prior to his biggest fight against Anthony Joshua that turned out to be a one-sided beating is reason enough, but the coach who is not rushing to be in front of the camera helped Usyk outclass one of the biggest ticket sellers in boxing in Joshua’s seemingly hometown. This is the type of win that makes people take heed of everyone around this type of win.

Ben Davison – Davison had some notable wins this year with Josh Taylor becoming an undisputed 140 lbs world champion as well as Leigh Wood becoming a world champion. Davison has emerged since his work in the first Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder fight, working with Fury, as one of the guys in the industry, not unlike how Kid Cudi became a music industry darling after Kanye West’s “808’s and Heartbreaks”, or Travis Scott did after “Yeezus”. Davison is one of the industry tastemakers, and is viewed as the future of the sport of boxing in terms of teaching.

Javiel Centeno – Centeno’s work with George Kambosos Jnr is going largely unnoticed since he isn’t looking for it, but Centeno helped Kambosos get a win that will forever change Australian boxing history. Florida-based boxing coach
