2022 Women’s Boxer of the Year: Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor
2022 Winner: Claressa Shields and Katie Taylor
2021 Winner: Seniesa Estrada
Katie Taylor – The most profitable, and marquee fighter of her era, put forth a masterpiece as she fought Amanda Serrano in a modern classic we awarded fight of the year. This was the crowning achievement of Katie Taylor’s career, and a year to remember.
Claressa Shields – The most accomplished and decorated women’s boxer of all-time, went to the U.K., and beat her boogeywoman, in Savannah Marshall the lone woman to defeat her. Shields silenced the critics and proved she is the best in women’s boxing, yet again.
The historical meaning behind awarding both fighters women’s boxer of the year pays tribute to the fact that both fighters helped move the sport of women’s boxing forward.
Taylor helped prove that an economic market place does exist for women’s boxing, and Shields demanded respect like her male peers.
Honorable Mentions
Alycia Baumgardner – The biggest win of her career came in dethroning Mikaela Mayer, who now will be her rival until the end of the time, given the close, hard-fought fight the two had. Baumgardner is now an A-list celebrity in boxing.
Yokasta Valle – MarvNation and Golden Boy Promotions emerging prospect who is now a unified champion in both the 105 and 108 lbs., though she has to pick the division she will continue to fight in, emerged as a potential star in 2022, after not even being on my radar prior.
Nina Hughes – Winning a world title at 40-years-old, and against a worthy champion, Jamie Mitchell was a big statement.
