Women’s Amateur Boxer: Rashida Ellis

2021 Winner: Oshae Jones

Rashida Ellis had a solid year leading her to the award. Ellis, a 2020 Olympian, firmly held her place on the USA Boxing roster as she even holds the last win over Beatriz Ferreira, who she beat in May, in order to win the IBA Women’s World Championship. 

Ellis’ lone loss this year came at the 2022 Pan-Am Games to Beatriz Ferreira, someone who is known signed to Matchroom Boxing, and getting a lot of media attention. Ellis was one of the most notable this year, in a year in which most fighters are positioning themselves into places to have a shot at the Olympic Trials, and/or make the Olympic team. 

Ellis was the most notable, and noteworthy – and is the face of USA Boxing for the women’s side of competition. 

Congrats to Ellis, who now will look to become a two-time Olympian in 2023. 

Honorable Mention: 

Stephanie Simon – Last December, Stephanie Simon, became a player on the world stage in amateur boxing, and this year she became the marquee fighter in her division.

Yoseline Perez – Undefeated in 2022 in youth, Perez, is very close to win this award as she holds wins over national champion Amy Minter, but lost to Alyssa Mendoza in the finals Add to the fact that she won gold internationally in Nov. 2022 with two stoppage wins wins, Perez is a featherweight to watch. 

Jennifer Lozano – Lozano was unbeaten for quite some time winning an international competition in March, but saw a first-round exit in an international tournament held in Turkey. This was followed by a split-decision loss at the international tournament in Colorado Springs which has Lozano looking at two, first-round exits in international competition, which isn’t common for her. Still a good year for her. 

Kayla Gomez – Gomez looks the part of a future boxing star, as she is winning a lot, and getting a lot of stoppages as well.

Alyssa Mendoza – Won a stacked division at nationals to close out the year, a formidable force at 125 lbs.
