U.S. Olympic Update: Nico Hernandez will medal, Russell wins opener
Team USA Boxing is continuing it’s amazing run as light flyweight Nico Hernandez of Kansas will at least earn a bronze medal after defeating Carlos Eduardo Quipo Pilataxi on Wednesday. Hernandez lost the first round, but rallied back to win the next two to win the decision.
Hernandez will face Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan on Friday at 8:15AM PST. The winner will fight for the gold medal.
Hernandez is the first U.S. boxer to win a medal since 2008.
Light welterweight Gary Antuanne Russell, brother of WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. defeated Haitian Richardson Hitchins 3-0. Russell had defeated Hitchins, two other times in the amateurs as well before meeting at the Olympics.
